Queer Coffee – An Overview

The Queer Coffee series of novels tells the stories of those amongst us who have had to navigate our journey as members of the LGBTQ+ community. Some did not know they were gay. Some found this realization caused them anguish, for some it was a relief. The common thread is that the more we understand ourselves the better ……

These are the stories of men, young and old, who have discovered, faced and grappled with their homosexuality.

They say that every lie has a grain of truth and so too do the Queer Coffee stories. While the characters and in some instances locations are fictitious. The events actually happened more or less as depicted. For this I must thank all those brave enough to share with me their experiences, as they navigated that most stressful time in their lives, when they grappled with their identity. Growing up is never easy, growing up queer is harder still and growing up queer in a time before the rise of the LGBTQ+ community was even harder and sometimes dangerous too.

The point behind all of the Queer Coffee stories is to help those grappling with their identity to know that they are not alone and that young people just like them in the past have faced many of the same challenges. Sometimes facing danger for just being who they are.

They say life is a journey, what few will tell you is that it is a voyage of discovery. Self-discovery and it is a journey we all take, in our own unique way.

Stories in the series (so far) are:

  • Queer Coffee for a Straight Boy – The original story of Reggie and Joe.

  • Queer Coffee in Brighton - A sequel highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Reggie and Joe.

  • Queer Coffee Down Under – The story of a loner growing up on a remote cattle station, who discovers himself after moving to Woolarong and Melbourne and finding a surprise connection to Furrowdale.
